COURSE UNITS

Contribute to effective workplace relationships

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to gather information and maintain effective working relationships and networks, with particular regard to communication and representation.

Organise personal work priorities and developments

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to organise own work schedules, to monitor and obtain feedback on work performance, and to maintain required levels of competence.

Maintain workplace safety in the security industry

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to maintain Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) policies and procedures to ensure the safety of self and others in a security work environment. It requires the ability to monitor risk controls and support OHS awareness and training processes.

Work effectively in investigative services

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to work in the investigative services sector. It requires the ability to interpret and comply with legal and procedural requirements, organise and complete daily work activities, and identify opportunities for professional development. It also requires use of methods for improving own knowledge base and maintaining a professional approach in carrying out investigations.

Provide quality investigative services to clients

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to provide quality investigative services to clients. It requires the ability to identify the investigation needs of clients and identify and resolve client service problems. It also requires an ability to review the investigative services to identify required improvements.

Store and protect information

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to store and protect information for future retrieval. It requires an ability to use appropriate technology to record and maintain the integrity of data, as well as to preserve evidence which may be used in future judicial proceedings

Operate information gathering equipment

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to operate equipment to gather information about persons, items or assets. It requires the ability to determine surveillance methods, operate surveillance equipment and document information. It also requires compliance with legislation applicable to investigation processes.

Develop investigative plan

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to develop and document an investigative plan. It requires an ability to assess the scope of the investigation, select a preferred investigative method based on client requirements and time, resource and legal parameters, and plan for contingencies in the conduct of the investigation.

Compile investigative report

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to organise and present information gathered by surveillance or factual investigation. It requires the ability to organise and evaluate gathered information and data and prepare and present reports and attachments in a format suitable for review and dissemination.

Conduct surveillance

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to gather information through surveillance operations. It requires the ability to select appropriate surveillance methods, plan and organise the sequence of activities, and use specialist equipment appropriate to the task. It also requires compliance with legislation applicable to surveillance processes.

Organise and operate a surveillance vehicle

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to select a suitable surveillance vehicle to perform required investigative duties. It requires the ability to operate a vehicle to perform both static and mobile surveillance functions while following road and traffic laws and assignment instructions. It also requires the ability to use surveillance equipment to gather information and evidence.

Gather information by factual investigation

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to gather oral, written and electronic information for the carriage of investigation tasks. It requires the ability to plan and carry out factual information gathering activities, analyse and verify information, and present clear and accurate recommendations.

Conduct interviews and take statements

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to acquire information by interview and take statements to assist or initiate an investigation. It requires the ability to plan and carry out effective information gathering activities through interview and post-interview processes, use recording equipment, take accurate statements and manage all investigative information in a secure and confidential manner.

Prepare and present evidence in court

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to prepare and present information which may be used in a judicial or quasi-judicial environment as evidence. It requires the ability to gather and manage information, prepare and give evidence in court, store evidence and complete documentation.

Locate subjects

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to investigate and locate subjects, determine appropriate means of approach and write relevant reports on the outcomes.

COURSE INFORMATION

While there are no entry requirements for this qualifications (CPP30607 Certificate III in Investigative Services) you will need, computer skills, writing skills and some maths.

This qualification requires you to complete a language, literacy and numeracy test.

From 1 January 2015 it is now a requirement that all students require a USI (Unique Student Identifier) number for all studies. Applying for a USI is cost free and will remain with you for life.

Resources Required for this Course (CPP30607 Certificate III in Investigative Services)

Your practical assessments will require you to simulate actual workplace tasks and resources which relate to the unit of competency.

Hence, you must have access to;

a vehicle;
a video camera or other video recording device;
a mobile phone;
a volunteer with their own vehicle who can assist you with the surveillance assignment;
a driver’s licence (minimum – provisional licence). PLEASE NOTE: It is a requirement for you to provide PICA with a certified copy of your driver’s licence. If you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact us;

a volunteer willing to be the subject of a static surveillance assignment.

This nationally recognised qualification (CPP30607 Certificate III in Investigative Services) is available via online self-paced learning methods. E- learning students have 12 months from the date of enrollment to complete the qualification.

Because everyone learns at different rates, the duration of the course will vary depending upon the hours that you dedicate to your studies.

Total nominal hours: 349 hours
Volume of Learning: 1-2 years or 1200-2400 hours
Full time load 25hr a week

Generally you must be 18 years or age or older and have had no criminal convictions in the previous 10 years to be eligible for a private inquiry agents license.
