Cryptocurrency Investigators (multiple roles)

The AFP’s Cryptocurrency Capabilities team (CCT) is broadly responsible for uplifting the AFP’s capability to take appropriate action where cryptocurrencies are identified in investigations. The team provides subject matter expertise and operational support to both criminal and proceeds of crime investigations. The team identifies and addresses risks in the investigation and handling of cryptocurrencies in order to provide guidance around best practice.
The CCT is responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with international and domestic law enforcement and regulators, industry and academia in the cryptocurrency environment. The team provides investigator training and awareness and a wide array of project work involving cryptocurrencies.
These roles sit within Cryptocurrency Capabilities Team in the Criminal Assets Confiscation (CAC) porfolio. There are multiple roles including:
- Assistant Cryptocurrency Investigator – Band Level 4 $76,928 – $90,434
- Cryptocurrency Investigator – Band Level 5 $90,434 – $97,970
- Senior Cryptocurrency Investigator – Band Level 6 $97,970 – $108,093
The key duties of the position include:
Increasing the AFP’s capabilities to take appropriate action where cryptocurrencies are identified in investigations, ensures the AFP is a step ahead of organised crime and can deliver maximum impact to the criminal environment. The AFP must work with industry and partner agencies both domestically and internationally in order to prevent criminals using new technologies to move the proceeds of crime to other jurisdictions.
Your role in CCT will include providing Investigator expertise to investigations to identify, trace and seize cryptocurrencies that have been used to facilitate or are the proceeds of crime.
These positions present an ideal opportunity for someone wishing to further develop their skills and experience within one of the AFP’s most progressive and dynamic teams. Training opportunities will be provided which may include travel interstate and overseas.

Eligibility
Assistant Cryptocurrency Investigator – Band 4
• You must be an Australian Citizen;
• Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance or the ability to obtain one;
• Relevant qualifications or experience and knowledge in an area or expertise; and
• Experience using cryptocurrencies and non-custodial wallets.
Cryptocurrency Investigator – Band 5
• You must be an Australian Citizen;
• Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance or the ability to obtain one;
• Relevant qualifications or experience and knowledge in an area or expertise;
• Experience using cryptocurrencies and non-custodial wallets;
• Minimum 2 years’ experience in supporting investigations/intelligence gathering (in public or private sector) and/or experience in the cryptocurrency industry; and
• Understanding of the cryptocurrency industry and the relevant stakeholders.
Senior Cryptocurrency Investigator – Band 6
• You must be an Australian Citizen;
• Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance or the ability to obtain one;
• Relevant qualifications or experience and knowledge in an area or expertise;
• Experience using cryptocurrencies and non-custodial wallets and understanding of how cryptocurrencies work and their features;
• Minimum 2 years’ experience leading or providing subject matter expert (SME) assistance to criminal or civil investigations involving cryptocurrencies (in public or private sector)
• Understanding of the cryptocurrency industry and the relevant stakeholders; and
• An ability to provide evidence regarding cryptocurrencies in legal proceedings as a SME.
