Turn Your Experience Into a Nationally Recognised Qualification
If you’ve developed valuable skills throughout your career, PICA’s Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process can help you convert that experience into a nationally recognised qualification. It’s a practical pathway that recognises what you already know.
Our 4-Step RPL Process
Our streamlined four-step RPL process makes it easy to have your skills and experience assessed towards a nationally recognised qualification. Here’s what you can expect from application through to enrolment.

Download an RPL Kit
Select the qualification you wish to apply for through RPL. Download the corresponding RPL Kit to review the evidence requirements for each unit of competency before submitting your application.

Prepare and Submit Your Application
Complete the RPL kit and gather all relevant supporting evidence (e.g. workplace documents, references, qualifications, or third-party reports). Submit your completed application and evidence to rpl@pica.edu.au.

Assessment of Evidence
A qualified assessor will review your submission in accordance with the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence. You may be contacted to provide additional information or clarification if required. You will be notified in writing of the outcome, including any units of competency for which RPL has been granted.

Enrolment and Payment
Following the assessment outcome, you will be advised of any applicable fees. Upon acceptance of the outcome and receipt of payment, you will be provided with instructions to complete your enrolment.
Before You Apply
Before submitting your Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) application, please keep the following important information in mind. These requirements help ensure your application can be assessed accurately and efficiently.
- RPL is an assessment-only pathway and does not include any training or course delivery
- Students must provide sufficient, valid, authentic and current evidence to support their RPL application
- Outcomes are based on the evidence provided and are not guaranteed in every application
- Applicable fees will be clearly outlined before enrolment, allowing you to make an informed decision
How RPL works
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about RPL at PICA
What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)Â is an assessment process that allows your existing skills, knowledge and workplace experience to be recognised towards a nationally recognised qualification. Rather than completing training for competencies you have already developed, RPL provides an opportunity to demonstrate what you know through your professional experience, previous study, workplace training or other relevant learning.
At PICA, Registered Training Organisation (RTO) 40789, our experienced assessors evaluate your evidence against the requirements of the qualification you are seeking. Every application is assessed individually to ensure your knowledge and practical experience meet the nationally recognised competency standards.
RPL is designed for people who have gained valuable industry experience over time and want that experience formally recognised. Whether your skills have been developed through full-time employment, government service, volunteer work or professional development, RPL can provide a practical pathway to achieving a recognised qualification without unnecessary duplication of learning.
What are the benefits of gaining a qualification through RPL?
An RPL qualification provides formal recognition of the skills and experience you’ve built throughout your career. It can strengthen your resume, improve your employment prospects and support applications for promotions, new roles or further study. Employers also value nationally recognised qualifications because they demonstrate that your knowledge has been independently assessed against recognised industry standards.
Beyond career opportunities, RPL is an efficient way to achieve a qualification without repeating learning you’ve already completed in the workplace. It acknowledges the value of your professional experience and provides a recognised credential that reflects the knowledge and competencies you’ve developed over time.
Is an RPL qualification recognised across Australia?
Yes. Qualifications awarded through RPL are nationally recognised and have the same standing as qualifications achieved through traditional classroom or online study. The qualification itself is identical, with the only difference being the assessment pathway used to demonstrate competency.
This means your qualification can be used throughout Australia for employment opportunities, career progression and, where applicable, entry into further education. Employers recognise the qualification because it has been awarded against the same nationally recognised competency standards as any other graduate.
Who can apply for RPL?
RPL is suitable for people who have developed relevant skills and knowledge through employment, workplace training, previous study, volunteer work or other practical experience. If you’ve been performing a role for some time but have never gained a formal qualification, RPL may provide an opportunity to have that experience recognised.
Every applicant’s background is different, which is why PICA assesses each application on its individual merits. Your experience, supporting evidence and the qualification you’re seeking are all considered to determine whether RPL is the most appropriate pathway for achieving a nationally recognised qualification.
How does the RPL process work?
The RPL process is designed to assess the skills and knowledge you’ve already gained through your professional experience. After submitting your application, PICA’s assessors review your background and supporting evidence against the requirements of the qualification you’re seeking. This evidence may include employment history, qualifications, training records, workplace documents or other information that demonstrates your competency.
If additional evidence or clarification is required, your assessor will contact you to discuss the next steps. Once the assessment is complete, you’ll be advised of the outcome and, if successful, you’ll be able to proceed with receiving your nationally recognised qualification.
How long does an RPL assessment usually take?
Assessment timeframes can vary depending on the qualification you’re applying for and the amount of evidence provided. Applications with comprehensive supporting documentation are generally able to be assessed more efficiently, while more complex applications may require additional review.
PICA is committed to conducting thorough and accurate assessments rather than rushing the process. Each application is carefully evaluated to ensure your experience is appropriately recognised and mapped against the relevant competency requirements. If additional information is needed during the assessment, your assessor will keep you informed throughout the process.
Will I need to speak with an assessor?
Not always. Many RPL applications can be assessed using the evidence you provide, without the need for further discussion. However, if your assessor needs additional information or would like to clarify aspects of your experience, they may arrange a phone or online competency conversation.
These conversations are informal and designed to help you demonstrate your existing knowledge and skills. They are simply another assessment method that allows your assessor to gain a complete understanding of your experience and ensure the most accurate assessment outcome.
Will I have to complete any study?
Not necessarily. If your existing skills, knowledge and experience fully meet the requirements of the qualification, you may not need to complete any additional training. The purpose of RPL is to recognise competencies you’ve already developed throughout your career.
If your assessment identifies areas where further evidence or additional learning is required, your assessor will explain the available options. This ensures you understand exactly what is needed to achieve the qualification while avoiding unnecessary study where your existing experience already demonstrates competency.
What evidence can I provide to support my RPL application?
The evidence you provide helps demonstrate the skills and knowledge you’ve gained throughout your career. This may include your resume, position descriptions, previous qualifications, training certificates, performance reviews, references, work samples or other documents that reflect your experience. The most valuable evidence is information that clearly demonstrates the work you’ve performed and the responsibilities you’ve held.
Don’t worry if you don’t have every document available. Every applicant has a different employment history, and there’s no single checklist that suits everyone. PICA’s assessors will consider the evidence you provide and determine whether any additional information is needed to complete your assessment.
What if I don't have all of my evidence?
It’s common for applicants to be missing some supporting documents, particularly if they’ve worked in the same industry for many years or changed employers several times. Not having every piece of evidence doesn’t necessarily prevent you from applying for RPL.
PICA assesses each application individually and will review the information you can provide before determining whether any additional evidence is required. In some cases, alternative forms of evidence or a competency conversation may help demonstrate your knowledge and experience. The focus is on building an accurate picture of your skills, rather than expecting every applicant to provide identical documentation.
Can overseas qualifications or work experience be recognised?
Yes. Overseas employment and qualifications may be considered as part of your RPL application where they are relevant to the qualification you’re seeking. International experience can provide valuable evidence of your skills, knowledge and professional competency.
Your assessor will review your overseas experience alongside any Australian employment, training or supporting documentation you provide. The assessment focuses on whether your overall experience demonstrates the required competency standards, regardless of where those skills were developed.
How recent does my work experience need to be?
Your experience should demonstrate that your skills and knowledge are current and relevant to the qualification you’re applying for. While experience gained over many years can still be valuable, assessors also need to be satisfied that your competency reflects current industry practices.
If some of your experience is older, don’t assume you’re ineligible. PICA considers your complete employment history, recent work activities, professional development and other supporting evidence when assessing currency. If further information is required, your assessor will discuss the most appropriate way to demonstrate your current competency.
How much does RPL cost?
The cost of an RPL assessment can vary depending on the qualification you are applying for and the assessment requirements. PICA aims to provide clear, transparent pricing so you understand the costs involved before making a decision to proceed.
If you’re unsure which qualification is most suitable, our team can discuss your experience and provide information about the available options. Once the appropriate qualification has been identified, you’ll receive details of the applicable fees and any payment options that may be available.
What qualification will I receive?
If your application is successful, you’ll receive a nationally recognised qualification that reflects the skills and knowledge you’ve demonstrated through the RPL assessment process. The qualification is issued by PICA and is recognised throughout Australia under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
Qualifications achieved through RPL have the same standing as those obtained through traditional study. The difference lies only in the assessment pathway, with your existing experience being assessed instead of completing formal training for competencies you already possess.
What payment options are available?
Is my information and evidence kept secure?
Yes. PICA understands that your application may contain personal information, employment records and other sensitive documents. All information submitted as part of the RPL process is handled with strict confidentiality and is used solely for the purpose of assessing your application.
Access to your information is limited to authorised personnel involved in the assessment process. PICA is committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring your personal information is managed in accordance with applicable privacy obligations and industry best practices.
What happens after I submit my application?
Once your application has been submitted, PICA’s assessors will begin reviewing your experience and supporting evidence against the qualification requirements. Every application is assessed individually to ensure your skills and knowledge are accurately evaluated.
If additional information is required, we’ll contact you to discuss the next steps. You’ll be kept informed throughout the assessment process and notified as soon as a decision has been made regarding your application.
Who can I contact if I have questions?
If you have any questions about the RPL process, qualification suitability or your application, Kerri Baxter, PICA’s RPL Officer, is your dedicated point of contact. Whether you’re exploring your options or ready to begin your application, Kerri is available to provide guidance and answer your questions.
Every applicant’s experience is unique, and Kerri can help you understand how the RPL process works, discuss the qualifications that may suit your background and explain what to expect throughout the assessment. If you’re unsure where to start, simply get in touch and she’ll be happy to assist.
